ISB Vivarium Core

Overview of Services

The rodent vivarium at the Institute for Systems Biology (ISB) provides support and services for researchers whose work involves the use of animals. Through compliance with the Animal Welfare Act, Office of Laboratory Animal Welfare (OLAW), AAALAC International and ISB policies, we aim to provide exceptional animal care.

The ISB vivarium is a Specific Pathogen Free (SPF) barrier facility consisting of three holding/breeding rooms, a standard procedure suite, an ABSL-2 infection/procedure suite with a pass-through autoclave, and cage wash areas.

Each holding/breeding room contains ventilated cage racks (M.I.C.E. system, Animal Care Systems Inc.), a single Class II Biosafety Cabinet and a ventilated cage change station.

The ABSL-2 infection/procedure suite contains ventilated cage racks (SealSafe Plus, Tecniplast USA), three Class II Biosafety Cabinets, and a pass-through autoclave.

Per diem rates for cages can be found on the Price List at the bottom of the Request Services tab.

Additional vivarium services include animal procurement, transfers/shipments, off-site quarantine, veterinary services, and technical assistance by vivarium staff. Rates for these services can also be found on the Price List at the bottom of the Request Services tab.

All procedures related to animal care follow the recommendations of the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals, are established in SOPs, and are regularly reviewed by the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC).

Facility Training Requirements

Training is required for anyone requesting to work with animals and/or enter the vivarium facility.  Some levels of training are offered via an automated online system and others include personalized training with the Vivarium Manager, which is billed at an hourly rate.  Animal Handling Authorization t and enrollment in the Occupational Health program is also required. In some cases, respirator fit-testing is also recommended.
